THE FREIGHT MARKET: FAIRLY STEADY - VISTAAR
 COALspot.com - The freight market was fairly steady with all the indices up with maximum gain in the Panamax segment. The BDI was up by 7.65 pct closing at 760 points and Cape size index was up by 6.38 pct closing at 1,367 points. The Panamax saw the maximum gain up by 15.22 pct closing at 772 points. The supramax and Handy size index was slightly up closing at 745 points (up by 0.81 pct) and 448 points (up by 0.45 points) respectively.
The demand for iron seems to have picked up and likely to continue until Chinese New year. The coal prices have been flat and the demand is still weak. Short period rates delivery far east for Panamax were at US$ 7500-8000 per day and Supramax rates were at US$ 8250 per day.
According to Vistaar shipping Singapore, the average charter rates was at Cape / US$ 6213 per day , Panamax / US$ 6123 per day , Supramax / US$ 7791 per day and Handy size / US$ 6667 per day.
The futures for three years (2013-2015) was at around Cape / US$ 13500 per day, Panamax / US$ 9000 per day, Supramax / US$ 9500 per day and Handy size / US$ 8000 per day.
The supramax index in the far east (S8 route) was soft and was down by 9.12 pct steady closing at US$ 7810 per day (last week US$ 8660 per day) . In the meantime, the S7 route was also down by 7.31 pct closing at US$ 4818 per day (Last week it was at US$ 5198 per day).
The freight market in this sector is expected to be steady/flat next week, Vistaar says.
The Brent crude oil prices was slightly down and closed at US$ 110.57 per barrel (last week US$ 111.45 per barrel). However the bunker prices closed higher at US$ 636.00 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 11th Jan 2013).
