LOW DEMAND PUSHES CHARTER RATES TOWARDS DOWN - VISTAAR
 COALspot.com - The freight market has softened and BDI, The Baltic Dry Index, a measure of shipping costs for dry bulk goods, plunged below 1000 points on Friday closed at 966 points (down by 12.67 pct).
The Baltic Dry Index is issued daily by the UK-based Baltic Exchange, and has been in existence since 1744. It tracks the worldwide international shipping prices of major raw materials and dry bulk cargoes by sea, including grain, iron ore, coal and other fossil fuels. The BDI measures the shipping costs of these raw materials for four different sizes of merchant vessels on 26 different geographic routes and averages them into one index.
The cape index has also dropped by 1.67 pct and closed at 1832 points. The Panamax also continued to fall this week closed at 936 points . The supramax and handy size index was almost at same levels down by less than 1 pct closing at 760 points and 470 points respectively.
The charter rates dropped towards second half of the week due to drops in demand. The Freight market likely to be soft next week too.
The average charter rate for Cape was around US$ 12,066 per day , Panamax was at around US$ 7441 per day this week. In the meantime Supramax was at US$ 7,947 per day and Handy size US$ 6,589 per day.
The futures for three years (2013-2015) was at around Cape / $14000 per day, Panamax $ 9,500 per day, Supramax $ 9,500 per day and Handy size$ 8000 per day.
The supramax index in the far east (S8 route) was down by 3.36 pct and closed at $ 9770 per day (last week it was at $ 10110 per day). The route S7 was also down by 1.46 pct closed at $ 5725 per day (last week was at $ 5810 per day) . The market seems to be weak this week and the freights from Indonesia to India also to be soft next week.
The congestion in EC Australia increased to 79 vessels this week (last week 67 vessels). The vessels waiting at main coal loading ports were at Haypoint/4, DBCT/17, Gladstone/17, Abbot Point/2, New Castle/33, Port Kembla/2 vessels.
The Brent crude oil prices was down by 3.59 pct and closed at $ 107.16 per barrel (last week $ 111.15 per barrel). The bunker prices closed higher at $ 595.00 (last week $ 600.50 pmt) for IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 6th Dec 2012.
