SOUTH AFRICA'S CONSULTING GROUP OPENS OFFICES IN CHINA, INDONESIA
Consulting engineering company SRK Consulting has opened new offices in Asia to cope with the growing demand for its services in the region.
The company says that increasing opportunities in China have “convinced it” to open a second office in Nanchang, in Jiangxi province, to complement the company’s existing Beijing branch, which was opened in 2005.
SRK China MD Dr Yonglian Sun reports that SRK has identified a need to extend its capabilities within the mine design and opera- tions areas to meet the demand for services requested by Chinese entities.
“Jiangxi is a major mining province and has one of China’s three best mining design institutes, the Nanchang Engineering and Research Institute of Nonferrous Metals,” Sun says. “SRK’s intention is to develop close coopera- tion with the design institutes for projects that need to be signed off by certified Chinese institutes.”
The Beijing office, which has grown to more than 30 staff members, will continue to provide geological, engineering and environmental consulting services to the mining industry throughout China.
Sun reports that, despite the new office’s infancy, it has been busy. “The company has signed several projects since April 1, and it is expected that the business will increase quickly. There is a large presence of Chinese State-owned companies in overseas markets and SRK has noticed an increasing trend for SRK China to provide services in the due diligence, feasibility study and mine design areas for these companies.”
SRK has also opened an office in Indonesia.
The new office in Jakarta is aimed at cement- ing a stronger foothold on the expanding Indonesian mining market.
The office expands existing ties to the region, established through a number of significant projects that SRK has worked on over many years. According to SRK’s Indonesia manager, Budi Santoso, the new team based in Jakarta will enhance the range of services provided. “Previously, SRK was able to manage services from other global and regional offices. However, a much wider market can be accessed from an Indonesian office, where services such as exploration can be included in the broader service offering.”
He adds that a more stable political and regulatory environment in Indonesia is giving companies looking to explore in the country greater confidence.
“The Indonesian government has promul- gated a new mining law which will bring certainty to the mining business. The law has been anticipated for ten years and plans are still being made regarding its implementation,” Santoso says.
He reports that the mining business community has increased confidence that the expected implementation of the legislation will be finalised this year. The government also still honours the ongoing permits and contracts until they expire.
Some six consultants and four staff members are expected to work from the Indonesian office initially, with management support coming from SRK’s Australian practice. The main aims for the first year, according to Santoso, will be to raise awareness of the new Jakarta office and to bed down current business opportunities.
He expects business to come from exploration and Joint Ore Reserves Committee-compliant report preparation, mining services, and merger-and-acquisition due diligence work.
Santoso says the Indonesian office has made a promising start.
“The office has secured two major exploration projects, one for coal and one for grassroots base and precious metals properties for local Jakarta clients, and is continuing to work with Indonesian clients previously secured from our Brisbane office in Australia.”
