INDIA'S ULTRATECH BUYS 500,000T S.AFRICA COAL
Indian cement maker Ultratech has bought 10 handymax cargoes of South African coal at $73.00-$74.00 a tonne CIF for July-September delivery, Indian traders said.
Ultratech is one of the Indian cement producers which favours South African coal over cheaper, lower energy-content Indonesian material. Ultratech usually buys 50,000 tonne handymax-size cargoes for delivery into Chennai.
"This tender saw extremely aggressive offers by some parties which give a South African FOB price of $53.00 a tonne or less," said one trader who participated in the tender unsuccessfully.
Indian trading house Adani was awarded the majority of the cargoes with the balance split between traders Swiss Singapore and Visa, traders familiar with the tender result said.
Handymax freight rates between South Africa's Richards Bay and Indian ports have risen to around $21.00 a tonne during the past few weeks in line with the general freight recovery.
Indian traders seeking cargoes to offer to both Ultratech and fellow Indian cement maker Gujarat Ambuja were bidding at $52.00-$53.00 a tonne FOB Richards Bay on Monday when prices fell sharply.
"Coal prices are too volatile right now to risk making a low offer. All the cargoes for Ultratech and Ambuja will be fresh shipments not sold from stockpiles so it is very difficult to judge the right price to offer," another Indian trader said.
Cement makers and sponge iron producers have been steadily buying South African coal for delivery through the monsoon season, often swooping to buy when the delivered cost has fallen to below $80.00 a tonne.
The rise in freight rates recently has prompted end-users to seek lower FOB coal prices to stay within their target delivered costs.
Monday's fall in FOB Richards Bay prices fell to $53.00-$54.00 triggered a surge of Indian buying enquiries, traders and producers said.
India has become a vital market for South African coal during the past three years. India accounted for over 30 pct of South Africa's steam coal exports in January-May, according to South African producers.
India is likely to import 12 million tonnes out of South Africa's projected exports of 67-68 million tonnes in 2009.
