BULK FREIGHT MARKETS CONTINUED THEIR DECLINE IN LINE WITH WEAK DEMAND - VISTAAR
 COALspot.com - This week also the indices fell on all segments with BDI touching lowest in almost 3 years.
The BDI closed at 714 points down by 7.75 pct and the cape index closed at 1,095 points down by 6.33 pct. The panamax was the least affected this week down by 0.98 pct closing at 806 points. The Supramax and handy size index closed at 841 points (down by 5.08 pct) and 496 points (down by 6.59 pct).
The Supramax freight market was soft from Indonesia to India and Supramax vessels were trading around US$ 5,500-6,000 delivery South China and around US$ 8,000 delivery SE Asia for trip to India. Short Period charter rates for Supramax and Panamax was around US$ 9,000 per day. The freight rates is expected to be flat to soft next week.
The iron ore demand and prices being weak and the same is expected to drive freight market to soft. The cape size which mainly carries iron ore was lowest this year at US$ 2,779 per day.
The average charter rates was at Cape/US$ 2,779 per day , Panamax/US$ 6,420 per day , Supramax/US$ 8,798 per day and Handy size/US$ 7,179 per day.
The futures for three years (2012-2015) was at around Cape/US$ 14,000 per day, Panamax/US$ 10,000 per day, Supramax/US$ 10,000 per day , Handy size/US$ 8,250 per day.
The supramax index in the far east (S8 route) was down by 7.33 pct and closed at US$ 6,148 per day (last week US$ 6,635 per day) and S7 route was down by 7.54 pct and closed at US$ 4,928 per day (last week US$ 5,330 per day) . Both routes likely to be soft next week.
The congestion in EC Australia was at 76 vessels this week (last week 78 vessels). The vessels waiting at main coal loading ports were at Hay point/2, DBCT/14, Gladstone/5, Abbot Point/2, New Castle/48, Port Kembla/5 vessels. On the WC Australia iron ore vessels waiting was at 31 vessels (last week 47 vessels).
The Brent crude oil prices was up by 4.19 pct closing at US$ 113.75 per barrel (last week it was at US$ 113.45 per barrel). The bunker prices were slightly up closing at US$ 673.00 (last week US$ 657.50 pmt) for IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 17th August 2102.
Acording to George Economou, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of DryShips Inc., "the bulk shipping market is in a tough spot facing multiple challenges. In the drybulk and tanker segments, spot charter rates continue to hover at historic lows and asset values have dropped precipitously in the last two years, not to mention from the highs of 2007/2008.
