THIS WEEK IS EXPECTED TO BE FIRM AND DEMAND OF SHIPS WOULD BE STRONG - VISTAAR SINGAPORE
COALspot.com (Singapore): The BDI up by 487 points over last week which is an increase of almost 13 pct. The increase is again mainly due to Cape and Panamax index which was up by 1281 points and 371 points.
The Supramax and Handysize index was almost at same levels. The average charters rates per day at the closing of the week was at Cape / US$ 89,862, Panamax / US$ 25,074, Supramax / US$ 18,288 and Handysize / US$ 11,249.
Seems that the BDI is likely to be between 3,500 to 4,500 points for next few weeks. However the increase in BDI may not represent real demand and seems more due to heavy congestion in China, Australia and Indian ports.
As of a week before last week understand some 154 capes have been waiting due to congestion at various ports in Australia and China with vessels waiting upto 3 weeks in some ports.
The iron ore import volume continues to be maintained by China, which seems is keeping the freight market firm.
The Supramax from India to China have been enjoying healthy rates around US$ 18,000-20,000 per day.
The South American , US Gulf and Black Sea saw slight softness. The PG / and West Coast / East Coast India continued to be firm and Supramax were continuing to get around 18,000-20,000 per day.
The Far East / SE Asia slightly firm compared to a week before last week.
The short period rates with dely Far East was around Supramax US$ 15,000 / 16,000 ; Panamax / US$ 24,000 and Cape / US$ 58,000.
There were quite few one year and short period fixtures reported this week compared to last week.
"This week is expected to be firm and demand of ships would be strong" Capt. Reddy, Vistaar Shipping, Singapore
The bunker prices continued to remain firm with brent crude between US$ 71-72 per barrel and the IFO(380 cst) prices ex Singapore touching around US$ 400 pmt levels.
Crude prices is expected to remain around current levels over next couple of weeks and bunker prices also would be firm
The indicative updates for spot freight rates on Supramax as follows:
