ASIAS PREMIER COMPREHENSIVE OPEN CUT MINING CONFERENCE SCHEDULED FOR FEBRUARY 2012
As the only such conference in the region for miners and service providers, IBC Asia’s Open Cut Mine Planning & Operational Excellence conference which takes place in Singapore from 21 – 24 February 2012 is set to be the must-attend event of the year for open cut miners across all commodities.
Press Release - The metals and mining industry is booming, and the Asia Pacific region is flush with investment. New projects are being commissioned to meet this demand, creating immense opportunities not only for the mining companies, but also for mining contractors and service providers. South East Asia by itself is slated to draw in over US$30 billion in mining investment by 2016.
With this increased and growing load, it is understandable that project owners are finding it difficult to adapt strategic mine planning and scheduling to the changing conditions of a company’s resources, such as its people, plant, or equipment.
“Mining companies today are under ever increasing pressure to increase output from existing mines and to bring new projects online quickly. Fundamental to the long-term performance of an operation is geologic modeling and mine planning. To maximize mine profitability, planners and schedulers must create mine plans that match the field as accurately as possible. Not surprisingly, this can be a difficult task, and getting it wrong can result in large unforeseen costs and significant lost revenue opportunities.” (Sharma, P. D.)
Geologists and engineering staff tend to focus on the mechanics of developing a mine plan, rather than operational improvements and excellence. However, in order to cope with growing demand, this core group of stakeholders needs to urgently begin applying strategic and operational considerations as well as real life practical benchmarks to ensure efficient execution of mine plans and overcome challenges that may be inhibiting a site’s ability to achieve optimal production levels.
Among the many factors, working with mines affected by extreme flooding is a common problem facing weather dependent setups like those in Indonesia, causing an urgent need to increase investments in high end water management solutions.
Another area that represents one of the major costs and challenges in connection with open-pit mining operations is handling of overburden, with many players identifying overburden and waste management as one of their key issues.
In addition, with the increasing global shift towards environmental considerations and sustainability issues, mine rehabilitation and environmentally friendly practices and systems are becoming ever more crucial, though questions remain on practical benefits, not to mention cost and efficiency considerations in implementation.
As Asia’s premier comprehensive event for the open cut mining sector, IBC Asia’s Open Cut Mine Planning & Operational Excellence conference will showcase solutions to address key technical, operational and commercial challenges in mine planning and development.
Spotlighting project showcases and actual case studies from major mining operations across the world, the Open Cut 2012 agenda will set benchmarks on operational efficiency, cost management and supply reliability, to help project owners and stakeholders meet the challenges of current, and future, demands.
Co-located with the 10th Annual Coal Markets conference, Open Cut Mine Planning & Operational Excellence will provide a prime platform for mining professionals and industry players to meet and network with top regional and global colleagues.
Featuring an elite group of the world’s leading mining experts and owners, including Rio Tinto; Sagittarius Mines (Xstrata Copper); PT Antam Persero; PT Freeport Indonesia; PT Bayan Resources; PT International Nickel Indonesia (VALE INCO); Arcelor Mittel; PT Kaltim Prima Coal; Minerals & Metals Group (MMG); GHD and more, Open Cut 2012 will provide insights on project updates and industry best practices to enhance mining operations.
