TSIS $5 MILLION PLANT TO START PRODUCING UPGRADED COAL - THE JAKARTA POST
 The Jakartapost reported that, PT Total Sinergy International (TSI), in association with Agritrade Resources Limited of Hong Kong, will upgrade its annual production of 500,000 metric tons of low-grade coal with Geo-Coal technology after the completion of its US$5 million mine-site commercial plant in Tamiang Layang, Central Kalimantan, by the end of this June.
“After the operation of the first plant, we are planning to build a second one by the end of this year and aim to produce 1 million metric tons per annum with a total investment $10 million,” Agritrade chief operating officer Ng Xinwei said Wednesday.
Ng hoped that with the Geo-Coal process, the company could produce Geo-Lite coal containing approximately 4,800 to 5,700 kilocalories (kcal) worth around $95-$105 per ton.
The company currently produces low-grade coal containing 4,000 kcal worth around $50 per ton.
Ng said the company planned to export 60 percent of its product to China and India, while the remaining 40 percent would be sold domestically.
According to the Indonesian Coal Mining Association (APBI), Indonesian coal miners expect to produce 340 million tons this year, an increase of 23 percent from 275 million tons last year. Twenty percent of that amount – around 70 million tons – will be allocated to fulfill domestic demand, while the remaining 80 percent will be exported.
TSI president director Harsudi Supandi said state electricity firm PT PLN would use his company’s upgraded coal for its 2x300 megawatt power generation plant in Labuan, Banten.
According to Harsudi, who is also the Geo-Coal founder, Geo-Coal processes raw brown coal with superheated steam, removing 60 to 80 percent of the moisture and increasing the energy content of the initial low-grade coal feedstock by 50 to 100 percent.
Geo-Coal technology also maintains the inherently low sulphur and ash levels of the low-grade coal feedstock, helping power generation plants meet today’s strict emissions standards.
The Geo-Coal upgrading process consists of five steps: the run-of-mine (ROM) coal preparation process, coal crushing process, drying process, setting process and cooling process.
Harsudi said that a successful coal upgrading process had to be economical.
“The total operating cost [including mining, upgrading, delivery and tax] is around $26-$30 per ton,” he said at Geo-Coal’s launching ceremony at the Grand Hyatt hotel in Central Jakarta. (drs)
