EUROPEAN COAL PRICES FOR 2010 SETTLEMENT DROP TO 11-DAY LOW - BLOOMBERG
 Benchmark European coal derivatives declined to an 11-day low as oil prices slumped.
Coal for delivery to Amsterdam, Rotterdam or Antwerp with settlement next year fell $1.60, or 1.9 percent, to $83.90 a metric ton by 10:28 a.m. in London, according to a composite figure compiled by Bloomberg.
The data are supplied by ICAP Plc, GFI Group Inc., Spectron Group Ltd., Tullett Prebon Plc, Credit Suisse Group AG, McCloskey Group Ltd., Bloomberg and TFS.
Crude oil fell to the lowest in a week on speculation that the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries will maintain production targets this week even as the global recession curbs fuel demand. Cheaper crude, a benchmark for gas prices in Europe, makes coal less attractive to burn for power.
Profit from running coal-fired plants has risen about 8.1 percent in the past month. The so-called clean-dark spread, which takes into account emissions costs, is about 12.33 euros ($17.12) a megawatt-hour, Bloomberg data showed. The calculation uses electricity prices in Germany, Europe’s biggest market.
German power for next year was 1.6 percent lower at 52.30 euros a megawatt-hour today, ICAP data showed.
