THE S6 ROUTE MAY CONTINUE TO BE FIRM - VISTAAR
COALspot.com - The freight market was firm this week with all indices up. The BDI , Cape Index and Panamax index was up by almost 9 pct where as Supramax and Handy size index was up by 6 pct and 2 pct respectively. The one trip charter rates were quite strong in the far east region, with Supramax being fixed at around US$ 14,000 per day delivery and Panamax fixed around 16,000 delivery China.
It is expected that March and April may continue to be firm and it will be interesting to see the effect of new Buildings which are scheduled for delivery this year. The tension in Libya and Middle east and other countries has kept the oil prices firm which will affect the freight market. With India imposing 20 pct duty on export of iron ore and falling prices of iron ore , the export from India is likely to reduce.
The average charter rates was at Cape/US$ 5,704 per day , Panamax/US$ 15,912 per day , Supramax/US$ 15,340 per day and Handy size/US$ 10,481 per day.
The Supramax index in the feast (S6 route) continued to be firm and was up by 15 pct (up by US$ 1,909 per day) and closed at US$ 14,727 per day (last week US$ 12,818 per day). The EC India/ China (S7 route) was down due to Indian government imposing 20 pct export duty on Iron ore and also iron ore prices softening was down by 3 pct (down by US$ 609 per day) and closed at US$ 17,229 per day (last week US$ 17,838 per day). The S6 route may continue to be firm, where as the S7 is likely to soften further.
The futures for three years (2011-2013) was at around Cape/US$ 19000 per day, Panamax/US$ 16500 per day, Supramax/US$ 15000 per day , Handy size/US$ 11500 per day.
The congestion in EC Australia almost at same levels at 77 vessels this week (last week 79 vessels). The vessels waiting at main coal loading ports were at Hay point/6, DBCT/20, Gladstone/12, Abbot Point/1, New Castle/36, Port Kembla/2 vessels. On the WC Australia iron ore vessels waiting reduced to 58 vessels (last week 45 vessels).
The waiting at Indian ports for coal vessels was quite normal and the main east coast ports were reported empty because of no coking coal vessels.
The crude prices jumped sharply with tensions continuing in Libya and Bahrain and other neighboring countries and Brent crude prices was at US$ 115.78 per barrel (last week US$ 112.34 per barrel). Bunker prices also firmed up sharply and was at US$ 638.00 pmt (last week US$ 646.50 pmt) for IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 4th March 2011.
