THE FREIGHT MARKET EXPECTED TO BE STEADY NEXT WEEK - VISTAAR
COALspot.com - The market was quite firm this week with freight rates in South east asia and India/Feast almost up by 30 pct.
However towards end of the week the markets appeared to lose momentum with cape index in negative and futures in all the sectors showed signs of softening. The BDI was up 1,047 points (up by 9 pct) and closed at 1,301 points where as the Cape index was almost at same levels and up 33 points (up by 0.2 pct only) and closed at 1,442 points. The panamax and Supramax index was up by 384 points and 135 points and closed at 2,004 points and 1,267 points respectively.
The handy size index was almost at same levels up by 21 points and closed at 670 points.
With the iron ore and coal imports by china likely to reduce as already signs of softening prices. The freight market expected to be steady next week.
The average charter rates was at Cape/US$ 6,623 per day , Panamax/US$ 16,073 per day , Supramax/US$ 13,247 per day and Handy size/US$ 9,906 per day.
The Supramax index in the feast (S6 route) was up sharply by 33 pct up by US$ 2,696 per day and closed at US$ 10,791 per day (last week US$ 8,095 per day). The EC India/ China (S7 route) was also up sharply by 34 pct and closed at US$ 17,308 per day (last week US$ 12,855 per day). The S6 and S7 route is expected to be almost at same levels next week also.
The futures for three years (2011-2013) was at around Cape/US$ 20,000 per day, Panamax/US$ 16,500 per day, Supramax/US$ 15,000 per day , Handy size/US$ 11,000 per day.
The congestion in EC Australia almost at same levels at 92 vessels this week (last week 90 vessels). The vessels waiting at main coal loading ports were at Hay point/13, DBCT/19, Gladstone/9, Abbot Point/1, New Castle/46, Port Kembla/4 vessels. On the WC Australia iron ore vessels waiting increased to 52 vessels (last week 43 vessels).
The waiting at Indian ports for coal vessels was quite normal except for Paradip, Haldia, Kandla where the berthing delays was high with berthing delays of about 10/12 days.
The crude prices continued to be firm up with the tensions in middle east continuing and Brent crude prices was at US$ 103.06 per barrel up 1.62 percent w-o-w (last week US$ 101.41 per barrel). Bunker prices also firmed up sharply and was at US$ 609.00 pmt (last week US$ 602.50 pmt) up 1.078 percent for IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 18th Feb 2011.
