COAL MARKETS 2011 TO HIGHLIGHT INDONESIAN COAL AND NEW SOURCES OF COAL SUPPLY
“Over 300 senior decision-makers from coal mining, power and trading companies expected to congregate in Singapore”
Press Release - Key coal producers and authorities from Indonesia, the world’s largest exporter of thermal coal will be in Singapore for the International Coal Week from 21st to 24th February 2011, when IBC Asia holds the 9th Annual Coal Markets and the co-located event, Coal Power Generation.
Indonesia’s coal exports for this year were expected to reach 247 million metric tonnes but recent developments may yet prove to be an impediment in reaching this target. Early this year, the Indonesian Trade Ministry instructed independent surveyors temporarily not to issue pre-shipment survey reports (LS) to the companies which were holding Production Operation IUP (special) for hauling and sale.
The Keynote Speech at the 9th Annual Coal Markets will be presented by Dr.Ir. Deddy Saleh, M.S. – the Indonesian Trade Ministry’s Director General of Foreign Trade, to clarify these and other trade issues through his session on “Easing Export Markets: Coal Trade Policy Updates”.
As a result of the non-issuance, around 70 ocean going vessels are stuck at coal loading ports around Indonesia because surveyors checking shipments won’t allow the exports before traders obtain fresh licenses, and the Indonesian Transport Ministry’s Leon Muhamad, Director of Sea Traffic will also be on hand at the event to provide further update for shippers.
The first day of the Coal Markets conference will feature a CxO Roundtable with Indonesian coal heavyweights discussing the “Implications of the Implementing Regulations of the New Indonesian Mining Law”. Panelists include Bob Kamandanu, Chairman of the Indonesia Coal Mining Association (ICMA) – who are also endorsing the conference, Dr. Supriyadi, President Commissioner of PT Bukit Asam together with Jeffrey Mulyono, President Director of PT Bhakti Energi Persada and Richard Lee, PT Kideco Jaya Agung’s Managing Director.
Indonesia’s domestic requirements will also be in focus with Nur Pamudji, Primary Enery Director of PT PLN (Persero) taking the stage to discuss their energy roadmap while Urip Trimuryono, the President of the Indonesia Cement Association will be presenting a session on industrial demand.
The 2011 programme for Coal Markets features an enhanced agenda with 2 complementing streams. Presenting within the “Asian Coal Scenario” conference track are Coal Videsh’s Chief, Phalguni Guha and Gujarat NRE Coke Chairman, Arun Jagatramka who will be providing demand requirements for thermal and coking coal from India.
Demand and supply updates will not be left out either, with presentations from by Nguyen Xuan Hoa, CEO, PetroVietnam Coal Import and Supply Company; Yusaku Yukita from Mitsubishi for Japan; CH Lee from LG International for Korea; Mylene Capongcol from the Philippines Department of Energy; and Viroj Sivavong, Chief for Fuel from Thailand’s EGAT.
Brand new on the agenda this year is the additional track on “Coal Transport and Logistics” featuring key speeches from PT Bukit Asam’s President Commissioner, Dr. Supriyadi, on their expansion plans and timelines for their infrastructure project in Sumatra as well as from the biggest coal rail network in the world – Queensland Rail National – whose Executive Vice President and CEO of Coal Operations, Marcus McAuliffe, shall be speaking on updates from Australia.
The conference converges into a plenary with the theme “What Lies Ahead?”, closing with a Buyer and Seller Roundtable on “Key Expectations and Predictions for 2011 and Beyond” with David Heap, Marketing Director of PT Harum Energy as one of the panelists together with key buyer representatives from LG International, PT PLN and Petrovietnam.
So what does lie ahead for coal markets? Mark Pervan, Head of Commodities & Industry Research at ANZ who will be speaking on coal pricing at the Coal Markets 2011 conference, states that “We predict both thermal coal and coking coal prices to remain at elevated levels over 2011. Strong demand from China and India will coincide with tight supply in Australia and Indonesia. The longer outlook is very positive with China's domestic coal supply becoming less accessible and India's rising Industrial demand becoming increasingly reliant on imported coal.”
