FREIGHT MARKET - LOWEST FIXTURES REPORTED SINCE MID 2009 - CAPT. REDDY

The holiday season seems to have severely affected the freight market with all indices down. Many spot vessels were caught and had to charter out at very low levels. Panamax and Supramax vessels opening far east have been fixed at around $ 8,000-9,000 per day for single trips, however the short period rate have been around $ 15,000 per day.
Seems these are the lowest fixtures reported since mid 2009.
The Handy size index was the least affected, down by just about 1.19 pct and the biggest drop was cape index which was down by 13.85 pct. The Panamax and Supramax index was down by 9.43 pct and 7.44 pct respectively.
The average charter rates was at Cape/$ 20,009 per day , Panamax/$ 14,711 per day , Supramax/$ 15,611 per day and Handy size/$ 12,157 per day.
The Supramax index in the feast (S6 route) was down by $ 1,985 per day (down by 13.73 pct) and closed at $ 12,470 per day (last week $ 14,455 per day). The EC India/ China (S7 route) was also severely affected and was down by $ 1,537 per day (down by 9.69 pct) and closed at $ 14,309 per day (last week $ 15,846 per day). The S6 and S7 route is likely to be soft and is expected to be under pressure next week also.
The futures for three years (2011-2013) was at around Cape/$ 23,000 per day, Panamax/$ 16,500 per day, Supramax/$ 16,000 per day , Handy size/$ 12,000 per day.
The congestion in EC Australia increased to 142 vessels this week (last week 125 vessels). The vessels waiting at main coal loading ports were at Hay point/8, DBCT/44, Gladstone/20, Abbot Point/6, New Castle/57, Port Kembla/6 vessels. On the WC Australia iron ore vessels waiting was almost at same levels at 24 vessels (last week 23 vessels).
The waiting at Indian ports for coal vessels was quite normal except for Paradip, Haldia, Kandla where the berthing delays was high.
The Brent crude prices continued to firm up reaching highest levels in last 2 years and closed at $ 93.46 per barrel (last week $ 91.67 per barrel). However bunker prices was almost at same levels and was at $ 507.50 pmt (last week $ 507.00 pmt) for IFO 380 CST ex.Singapore on 24th Dec 2010.
