CAPESIZE RATES ARE NOW AT THEIR LOWEST LEVEL SINCE AUGUST
It was a repeat performance for the market this week, with another increase in earnings for the small sizes but a sharp drop for the Capes. Overall the BDI slipped 3% Friday to Friday. In the ore market, China announced November imports of 57.3m tonnes, a 25% increase on October. However traders said October’s figures were distorted by the National Holiday during the month, which had pushed many normal shipments into September. November’s increase could also be explained by stockpiling ahead of January’s anticipated rise in ore prices, which are reported to be set 7.6% higher for first-quarter 2011. Total Chinese ore imports for Jan-Nov stand at 560.6m tonnes, down 0.9% from last year.
Supramax/Handy
The BSI continued its way up, with an increase of 4.8% during the week. The average of the TC routes closed at US$17,458 on Friday while the BHSI gained 2% with the average of the TC routes reaching US$12,150. The end of year rally is still in force with shippers/ charterers willing to have bills of lading dated in December. Supramaxes were getting fixed at about US$24,000 per day dop French Atlantic, redelivery India routing via Cape of Good Hope, with a premium of about US$2,000 for routing via Suez/Goa, where Transatlantic Round voyages are paying about US$20,000 daily. Out of the USG, Supras are getting fixed at around US$30,000 daily for a TC to the Med while a trip out is worth US$35,000 with redelivery Far East. The Pacific market climbed up a shade for the Supras, and they are now getting about US$16,000 per day for Indo to China. TC rates on WC India also climbed consistently to reach close to US$18,000 levels. There are numerous iron ore parcels now in the market, however the TML issue still persists. Volumes of coal from Indo to India have also increased. The market looks to remain firm for this week too, as shippers aim to move as much ore as possible.
Panamax
It was a slow week for the Panamaxes, although the Atlantic started strong. Overall the BPI dropped 1% and the 4TC average fell the same amount to finish the week at US$18,873 per day. Despite the unusual conditions in India, TC levels for Panamaxes from west coast India to China remain firm in the low US$20,000s level. A few cargos have been delayed due to the recent rainy conditions in Goa. Iron ore prices remain firm with a lot of buying/stockpiling by the Chinese. Although traders believe prices could go up in January, many experts do not echo these thoughts. Instead they believe prices may come off as construction activity eases off in northern China due to winter weather conditions, and stockpiles are sufficient. Goa/China freight levels on Panamax are at about US$16 pmt levels. TC levels may come under pressure as a lot of tonnage is expected open end December dates on the west coast.
Capesize
Another sharp drop for the Cape market this week, with the BCI dropping 9% and the four time charter losing another US$3,500 to finish on Friday at around US$25,300 per day. Rates are now at their lowest level since August. Widespread availability of tonnage remains the main problem. Atlantic markets lost the most during the week, seeing a market correction after their recent strength. The Pacific was the least affected although there are signs of several deals now in the US$8.30- US$8.50 range. The BCI fell another 30 points on Monday with few signs of an increase in cargo demand in the run-up to the holidays.
