DRY BULK MARKET TO KEEP RISING THIS WEEK ON STRONG CHINESE IRON ORE AND THERMAL COAL DEMAND - HELLENIC SHIPPING
Overcapacitated or not, the dry bulk market keeps its positive momentum as we move forward this week, with the Baltic Dry Index (BDI) rising by 0.77% to 2,748 points on Monday. Strong iron ore and thermal coal demand from Chinese buyers has been the main reason for this positive development for ship owners of dry bulk carriers. Still, one has to point out that if the market hadn’t been so oversupplied, freight rates would have skyrocketed, instead of the current trend of little by little increases. In fact, analysts have stated that the should the current massive orderbook not have been weighing down on the market, rates could now be well over 4,000 points.
According to the latest report from Commodore Research, 38 iron ore fixtures were reported last week, five more than the previous one and up moderately from an average of 30 iron ore fixtures reported during the previous four weeks. “25 of last week’s ore fixtures were for capesize vessels, a historically very large amount and 1 more than chartered during the previous week. Chinese iron ore demand remains robust and Chinese steel stockpiles and ore port stockpiles have both declined. Stockpiles of Chinese flat and construction steel products currently total approximately 14.8 million tons, 400,000 tons (-3%) less than a week ago. The decrease in Chinese steel stockpiles follows a 400,000 ton increase in stockpiles seen during the previous week. A week ago, we expressed caution regarding the previous increase in stockpiles but suggested that it was likely that two weeks of holidays in China had delayed some shipments of steel to end-users. Chinese steel and iron ore demand remains strong.
The amount of vessels chartered to export ore to China last week was very robust. Demand for coal and grain also remain strong, especially thermal coal demand in Asia, but panamax, supramax, and handysize rates still declined due to a moderate amount of vessels available in the market” said Commodore.
In terms of chartering, 127 spot trip fixtures are reported (10 more than the previous week) and 20 period fixtures (5 more than the previous week). Period activity has increased moderately from the trailing four-week average which has seen 15 period fixtures chartered on a weekly basis. Current activity is still quite low, however, compared to an average of 22 period deals chartered on weekly basis in September and 33 chartered on weekly basis in August.
Meanwhile, Commodore predicts additional support to the freight market from a variety of factors. “A very large amount of ore fixtures continue to be reported in the market - but the vast majority have recently been made only to ship ore to Chinese buyers. In previous weeks, a moderate amount of fixtures were also chartered to export iron ore to buyers outside of China. We expect that the sudden slowdown in European, South Korean, and Japanese ore buying interest will only be temporary. We also expect Chinese iron ore demand to remain strong in the immediate short-term. In recent weeks, we have also brought attention to strong Chinese thermal coal demand and predicted that Chinese thermal coal fixtures would surge by the end of this month. Chinese thermal coal fixtures have begun to surge, as expected, as coal buyers begin restocking for the approaching peak winter demand season. Expectations for an active cyclone season in Australia, and the likelihood of congestion increasing at Indonesian and Australian coal ports, each have the potential to lend additional support to the freight market” concluded the report.
