DRY BULK MARKET HEADS SOUTH ONCE MORE WITH MARKET SENTIMENT TAKING A CAUTIOUS APPROACH - HELLENIC SHIPPING
The dry bulk market didn’t manage to maintain the slightly upward momentum it had established during the first two session of the week, with the industry’s benchmark, the Baltic Dry Index (BDI) retreating again on Wednesday. The BDI was down by 1.44% on Wednesday to 2,468 points, while what’s worth noting is that all ship classes were on the downside. A Reuters report mentioned that according to traders the main reason for the drop was that market participants closed positions following Tuesday's rise and in anticipation of lower demand as of Friday as China heads into a one-week national holiday.
According to a weekly report from shipbroker Fearnley’s, the “back end of last week began to show some signs of improvement in the capesize market. The expectation was that this week would be active as the Far Eastern markets were back at work and would be busy clearing their desks, pending next weeks holidays. This has cautiously proven to be true. First led by the paper market and then followed by physical fixtures. The fronthaul market has moved from mid usd 20´s level to usd 28.00 pmt for Brazil/China, and vessels in the Pacific are securing round voyages in the mid usd 30000 range. The Atlantic is still a bit sluggish and the bids are actually below the rates achieved in the Pacific. There has been little activity on the period front, except a rumor that one of the ore majors has taken a vessel for short period in the mid usd 30´s” said the report.
Similarly, the Panamax segment “continued continued its downward trend from last week, however the Chinese re-entered the market on Monday. We see more cargoes in the market, but several of these cargos are tender biz. The steel production in China has picked up a bit again, and this should be positive for the iron ore prices and the shipping market. The longer period market is absent with what´s done-done private. Tarvs fetching around very low usd 20´s, fronthauls around 30k and Pac rounds fixing in the high teens. For the rest of the week we expect some more activity as the Chinese have holidays coming up (1/7 Oct) and the "Golden Week" coming up the week after. They will most likely need to clear out business matters before this holiday” said Fearnley’s.
As a result the Panamax market fell yesterday by 3.18 percent, while the Supramax segment was marginally lower by just 0.32 percent, i.e. virtually unchanged. According to Reuters’ sources, “coal traders were taking advantage of the five-week low in freight rates and a weak dollar against the euro to cover themselves for a possible rebound in power prices ahead of the winter heating season”. "Coal is one of the most important products carried by freighters, so if the increase in coal prices lasts, then we are likely to see an upward correction in freight rates too," one coal trader said.
In a separate story from Bloomberg, Andrew Dawson, a shipbroker at Freight Investor Services Ltd. in London was quoted as saying that with China on holiday next week, the expectation is that the market will come off again. Meanwhile, Chinese iron ore demand growth may resume later this year and into 2011, Vale SA, the world’s biggest exporter of the raw material, said yesterday.
