THE FREIGHT MARKET WAS BIT VOLATILE WITH NO CLEAR INDICATION OF THE MARKET - CAPT REDDY
 COALsopot.com: The freight market was bit volatile with no clear indication of the market.
However the BDI continued the upward trend mainly due to cape index. The BDI was up by 6.05 pct and the BCI up by 14.15 pct . The cape index has been steadily moving up for last few weeks. Panamax index was up only by 4.80 pct where Supramax was down by 5.55 pct. The handy size index was also slightly down by 1.20 pct.

There have been quite a few period fixture on the Cape and Panamax vessels which indicates that owners/charterers are anticipating the market to go up and probably hedging the risk. With the holiday season almost over expect that the market would firm up this month and probably expect to remain firm through Q4 2010.
The average charter hire was at Cape/$ 39,734 per day, Panamax/$ 25,099 per day, Supramax/$ 20,833 per day and Handy size/$ 15,702 per day.
The Supramax index in the Fareast (S6 route) down by $ 2,103 per day ( down by 9.72 pct) and closed at $ 19,540 per day. The ECI/China (S7) route also down by $ 1,872 per day (down by 9.00 pct) and closed at $ 18,859 per day . The S6 and S7 routes seemed to be slightly soft like all other Supramax routes.
The futures for three years (2010-2012) was firm for cape and panamax vessels and was at around Cape/$ 28,000 per day, Panamax/$ 22,000 per day, Supramax/$ 18,500 per day and Handy size/$ 14,000 per day.
The congestion in EC Australian ports was at the lowest at 100 vessels this week (last week 127 vessels ). The vessels waiting at main coal loading ports were at Hay point/2, DBCT/49, Gladstone/5, Abbot Point/Nil, New Castle/49, Port Kembla/Nil vessels. On the WC Australia iron ore vessels waiting was same at 20 vessels (last week 20 vessels).
The waiting at Indian ports for coal vessels was quite normal around 3/4 days, except that the congestion at Paradip and Haldia was increasing.
The Brent crude prices was almost at same levels and almost at same levels as last week at $ 76.55 per barrel (last week $ 76.93 per barrel). The bunkers prices was almost at same levels and the prices ex Singapore and was at $ 438.50 pmt (IFO 380 CST ex Singapore) on 3rd Sept 2010.
