INDONESIA EXPORTS 24.49 MILLION TONNES OF COAL IN JUNE 2010

Indonesia, the world largest coal exporter, exported 141.249 million tons of coal in the first half of this year. In June 2010, Indonesia exported 24.49 million tons of coal up 32.23 percent M-O-M. Indonesia’s coal exports in May 2010 were 18.52 mln tons which was the lowest in the first half of this year.

China & India Imports

China was a largest importer of Indonesian coal  since H2 of  2009 except April this year. China Imported 5.47 million tons of coal in June 2010, However, it was still below its record import of around 7 million ton in March 2010.

India was the second largest importer of Indonesian coal in June 2010 by importing 4.71 mln tons of coal to feed its power plants and other industries. India imported 5.04 million tons of coal in April 2010.

China’s Indonesian coal imports rise 19.66% from May 2010.  India imports also increased in June 2010 compare to May 2010 imports. Many Indian government utilities were awarded coal purchase orders for Indonesian origin due to freight advantage and price competitiveness. Indian government and private utilities are looking for mine investment in opportunities in Indonesia.

Indonesian  coal exports to India  raised by 46.64% M-o-M. 

Coal hungry India and China together imported around 10.194 million tons or  41.61 percent of total coal exports of Indonesia in June 2010. Indonesia’s high total moisture coal also hit export market recently with a significant  tonnage. Indonesian higher TM coal generally containing very low sulphur and low ash which are environmentally attractive to buyers.

“Chinese & Indian interests on coal are still there,"  a supplier, related to exports said. Indian buyers as well as Chinese buyers were floating enquiries to book cargo for August / September loading.

India had imported 4.71 mln ton of Indonesian coal in June 2010  compare to 3.21 mln ton in May 2010 or increased by 46.72 percent  from May imports. South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan have imported 3.42 mln, 3.07 mln and 1.79 million tons of coal in  June 2010 respectively.

“Indian buyers are still looking for 5500 – 6300 GAD coal from Indonesia. However, the price expectation of Indonesian suppliers are quite higher than Indian buyers expectation” said a coal supplier from East Kalimantan. East Kalimantan origin coal price is always higher than south Kalimantan coal. East Kalimantan small scale suppliers are offering 6300 GAD coal around US$ 78/MT FOB mother vessel  for  August loading where’s South Kalimantan suppliers are offering the same quality of coal below US$ 75/ MT.

“The Sumatra of medium to low calorific value coal being offered through Teluk Bayur port. However, the price of coal is quite higher than Kalimantan coal price due transportation cost”, a trader familiar with Sumatra supplies said.

Top coal exporter
Bumi Resources, the parent company of KPC and Arutmin was a largest exporter of Indoensian coal in June 2010. However Adaro Indonesian was the single largest exporter of coal In June 2010.  According to our sources, around 57.19  percent of total exported Indonesian coal in June, was exported by top 10 coal producers including Bumi, Adaro, Banpu and  Berau.
