THE DRY BULK MARKET CONTINUED THE DOWNWARD TREND - VISTAAR
 COALspot.com: The indices continued the downward trend this week also with BDI at 1,720 points and cape size index at 1676 points and the charter rates at US$ 12,495 per day.
However towards end of the week , the BDI, BCI and BPI index was up and the overall sentiment seemed up. The futures also in all categories moved up compared to last week. The Panamax was up by 7.61 pct where as Supramax index was down by 8.15 pct. The handy size index was down by 5.88 pct.

The poor demand of iron ore and coal by china seems to be the main reason for the soft market. With the steel prices still under pressure the iron ore imports may not increase much.
The iron ore ex. India has been extremely low and several ships have been seen ballasting out of India. It will be interesting to see whether the increase in the BDI and BCI will continue and how long will it be able to hold.
The average charter hire was at Cape/US$ 12,495 per day, Panamax/US$ 16,839 per day, Supramax/US$ 17,448 per day and Handy size/US$ 13,859 per day.
The Supramax index in the Fareast (S6 route) was down by US$ 1,270 per day and closed at US$ 16,810 per day. The ECI/China (S7) route further softened by US$ 2,202 per day and closed at US$ 15,165 per day . The S6 route is likely to firm up next week.
The futures for three years (2010-2012) was at around Cape/US$ 24,000 per day, Panamax/US$ 19,000 per day, Supramax/US$ 17,000 per day, Handy size/US$ 13,000 per day.
The congestion in EC Australian ports was at 121 vessels this week (last week 116 vessels). The vessels waiting at main coal loading ports were at Hay point/4, DBCT/59, Gladstone/10, Abbot Point/nil, New Castle/47 vessels, Pot Kembla/1 vessel. On the WC Australia iron ore vessels waiting increased to 31 vessels (last week 40 vessels).
The waiting at Indian ports for coal vessels was quite normal around 3/4 days except that congestion starting to increase at Visakhapatnam and Paradip.
The brent crude prices was almost at same levels at usd 75.20 per barrel (last week usd 75.61 per barrel). The bunker prices also firmed up and IFO (380 pcrices) ex Singapore and was at usd 446.00 pmt (ifo 380 cst ex Singapore) on 16th July 2010.
