COAL PRICES ON THE RISE
.jpg) Caixin online reported that, China's domestic coal prices have seen a 26.2 percent year-on-year rise in May. Meanwhile, the volume of coal imports and prices have also increased.
According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MITT), the domestic coal price in May was up 4.7 percent month-on-month. The growth rate was 3.5 percentage points higher than that in April.
During the first five months of this year, China imported 68.98 million tons of coal, up 114.3 percent year-on-year, making the country a net coal importer. In May alone, China imported 11 million tons of coal, in a rise of 16.6 percent from the same period last year. Average import prices for the first five months increased 30 percent year-on-year to US$ 96.70 per ton.
China became a net coal importer in February 2009 with increasing demand from steel and electricity production. According to Reuters, industry analysts predicted that China's total coal imports for 2010 are expected to reach 170 million tons, making it the world's largest coal importer.
Facing mounting pressures of coal price rise, China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) recently asked major domestic coal producers not to raise prices. The NDRC's price department has been urging coal companies to honor 2010 coal contract prices and return any additional charges gained from higher prices by the end of June.
