PAKISTAN WILL IMPORT 3.2 MILLION TON OF COAL IN 2009 - SEATRADE
COALspot.com (Pakistan) - SEATRADE Group of pakistan a single largest imported coal supplier in Pakistan, forecasting Pakistan steam coal imports will be reached to 3.2 million tons in 2009 and will be mostly for cement mills. Pakistan is expecting to produce 32 million tons of cement and local demand will be between 19 – 20 million per annum. Pakistan may export the remaining excess quantity of Cement and expected to export US$ 600 million worth of cement this year and average exports might touch 12 million ton per annum. Pakistan is expected to export its excess cement in form of bulk cement / clinker and bagged cement to overseas including Afghanistan.
Seatrade said, Indoensian coal will dominate Pakistani Market ( about 1.8 million) compare to South African coal (about 1.4 million ton).
According to Mr. Muhammad Najib Balagamwala, Chairman of Seatrade Group, Pakistan will need over 3 million tons of imported coal to support Pakistan’s cement Production. Pakistan’s traditional coal supplying countries are South Africa, Indonesia and China. Australian Coal also to acceptable to Pakistanis end-users provided the landed price of Australian coal is competitive compare to other origin of coal.
Seatrade indicted that, high calorific value coal would be mostly acceptable coal to pakistan market. But once the planned power plants are start operations, medium to low calorific value coal also will dominate the market.
Seatrade Group is currently importing about 2.9 million ton of coal for stock operations and cement mills and handling over 3.1 million tons of imported coal. Seatrade group is strong in shipping, ship operating, port handling and stevedoring. Seatrade group also planning to invest in coal assets in overseas as well as in Pakistan and studying the viability to proceed in investment. Seatrade to invest coal assets in Indonesia and Mozambique in near future as part of their expansion plan as total energy provider to pakistan.
