EXPANDED SA COAL TERMINAL TO START OPERATIONS ON MAY 1 - MINING WEEKLY
 Mining Weekly reported that, In line with expectations, the Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) had completed the R1,2-billion Phase V expansion, with operations of the 91-million ton terminal to start on May 1.
The project involved an expansion in the RBCT’s throughput capacity to 91-million tons, up from the former 76-million tons, but the project has faced a number of delays.
“We are delighted to finally reach this milestone in our expansion project. The commissioning comes at a point where South Dunes Coal Terminal (SDCT), a major Phase V contributor, has already concluded its agreement at the beginning of this month. In addition to SDCT, some contracts, with new empowered shareholders, have been signed, while the remaining few have been agreed to in principle and are in their final stages of being concluded,” RBCT CEO Raymond Chirwa said in a statement on Friday.
The SDCT announced earlier this month that it and the RBCT, as well as Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) had “found common ground”, allowing the deal to go ahead.
While the RBCT will be ready to receive coal and operate the terminal at the higher capacity, TFR, which owns and operates the rail lines, had yet to ramp up its capacity to meet the RBCT’s targets.
“I am confident that Transnet has taken a positive step and are in the process of implementing necessary debottlenecking rail infrastructure projects in order to meet the export demand required by RBCT exporters in the shortest time,” said Chirwa.
A total 61,14 million tons of coal was exported through the terminal in 2009, compared with a slightly lower tonnage received from TFR during the same year.
