PACIFIC SUPRA MARKET WAS STILL SOFTENING - BRS
A modest increase in dry bulk rates this week with activity picking up in the middle of the week. Panamax rates remain above the Capes, and there was continued optimism in the coal markets with China expected to be a net importer again in 2010.
Rising ore prices continue to put pressure on buyers to find new suppliers and China’s largest metals trader Minmetals Corporation confirmed it had started due diligence on several iron ore projects in Mauritania. Senegal also reported it will offer China 3.5bn tons of iron ore reserves with iron content of 63%. On the supply side, vessel deliveries continue to climb, with approximately 80 Capes, 25 Panamaxes, 75 Supramaxes and 60 Handysizes delivered so far this year. Interestingly the pace of delivery has accelerated significantly for the Capes and Handysizes, but remains modest for the Panamaxes where deliveries this year are just 15% higher than the last six weeks of 2009, helping keep Panamax rates firm.
Supra/Handy
The Supramax Atlantic market has been relatively busy throughout the week. The USG basin firmed up with some fresh requirement and only a few ships available, pushing the USG/Cont route over US$ 43,000 per day (more than a US$ 3,000 w-o-w increase). Scrap stems keep the Cont busy. ECSA market was steady as well and grain traders had to pay a good premium for April loaders. However with fewer iron ore exports out of WC India, ships are now ballasting toward ECSA. The Handy Atlantic market also rose, especially the ECSA/Cont route which gained more than US$ 1,500/day to finish the week just below US$ 31,000/day. In the Pacific, the Supra market was still softening. The ECI/China route lost almost US$ 3,000 per day and closed Friday at about US$ 28,500.
The Indo/China and Nopac routes improved in the middle of the week but lost all gains Thursday and Friday to close the week at very close to US$ 23,000. Short period market is now worth around US$ 25,000/day for TESS 52 delivery N China.
The Handyside market was firm and gained US$ 500 per day thanks to a good coal activity out of Indonesia.
Panamax
The Panamax market witnessed a small increase on the week, with the BPI rising 82 points and the average of the 4 timecharter routes gaining US$ 673 overall. However, rates in the Atlantic appeared a little ‘toppy’ towards the end part of the week with little fresh enquiry to report and limited activity in general, while the Pacific was still being largely held up and supported by the continued east coast south American grain exports.
This saw levels holding steady in the low-mid US$ 30,000s region for vessels delivering in the Far East. Short period rates in the east remained steady at around the US$ 32,000 level despite a lack of activity on the period front.
Capesize
A flat week for the Capes with only the Brazil/China run showing any real improvement. Freight rates on this route were up to around US$ 24.50 by the end of the week, but Australia-China showed no perceptible change. Overall the BCI recorded a slight gain of 3% to reach 3,071 points, while the four time charter average finished at US$ 26,250. FFA rates meanwhile dipped slightly for 2010 trading, although there was a small improvement in 2011 prices, and the physical market also saw the return of some period business, and a 171,800 deadweight vessel was reported booked at US$ 32,000 for one year. There was little clear direction in the market however, and rates came off again slightly on Monday.
