INDONESIA ROUND VOYAGES WERE GETTING BETWEEN HIGH TEENS - BRS
Another strong week for the bulk market and rates in all segments are now back above pre-Chinese New Year levels. Atlantic volumes remain robust, and a mid-week surge in paper rates also pushed the physical market higher. The World Steel Association (WSA) offered some optimistic news for European steel demand, predicting demand in the region would rise 20% during 2010. It also raised global growth forecasts up from 9% to 10% for the year, which will return the market back to 2008 levels. However the WSA warned that while the reactivation of many European blast furnaces was encouraging news, there were concerns of premature re-starts. It added that some steel business had been lost to Europe forever. The BRIC countries have now increased their global market share from 50% in 2008 to 58% in 2009, a figure which is forecast to rise again to 60% in 2010.
Supra/Handy
In the Atlantic the market stayed firm, mainly supported by a healthy amount of grain stems out of ECSA. Overall the rates went up steadily, gaining 5% on the Handy sizes and well over 10% on the Supras. For Handy sizes a TARV is now worth in the low US$20,000s, while a trip ex Black Sea to the Far East was in the high US$20,000s. For Supras a TARV was worth in the mid/high US$20,000s, while trips with delivery WAF via ECSA to the Far East are now worth in the low US$40,000s. A trip from the Black Sea east via Suez is now worth in the mid US$40,000s. The Pacific Supra market also continued on its upward path from the previous week, where Nopac and Aussie rounds were the movers and shakers. They closed the week in the region of mid/high US$20,000s to US$30,000, depending on specs and positions, which is up from the high teen/ low-US$20,000s at the start of the week.
Indonesia round voyages were getting between high teens and low US$20,000s, and picked up towards the end of the week. India continued to be extremely firm, maintaining rates in the low US$40,000 on the west coast, and mid US$30,000s on the east coast for non-Haldia positions. Haldia vessels were getting mid-high US$30,000s. There was lots of short period activity seen, with Supras fixing in the mid to mid/high US$20,000s for short period, and low-mid US$20,000s for 1 year, with deliveries in the Far East.
Panamax
The Panamax market saw substantial increases in both basins last week, and the Baltic Panamax Index rose by 4% to reach 4,177 points. There was continued tightness in the Atlantic, which saw levels rise by around US$3,000-US$4,000 for transatlantic/fronthaul business. Conditions in the Pacific were less dramatic although rates here also jumped by about US$1,500-2,000 for Pacific round voyages. With the market moving up, the period market saw some activity and a 73,000 dwt vessel was reported taken for two years at US$25,000/day, while one year periods was being fixed at around US$26,000/day.
Cape size
Another rise in Cape size rates last week, with the BCI jumping 10% to 4,328 points. The four time charter breached the US$40,000 mark again and finished the week at US$41,877 per day. A surge in paper rates near the end of the week also pushed rates up, as a tight tonnage situation plus a lack of cargoes created good anticipation for the short-term future. 2Q 2010 FFA rates closed on Friday at US$41,125/day. This bullishness also prompted some activity in the period market and a 2010-built 180,000 tonner was reportedly taken for one year at US$37,750/day. The BCI climbed 83 points on Monday.
