Saturday, 14 July 12 FREIGHT MARKET SEEMS TO BE QUITE VOLATILE - VISTAAR
COALspot.com - The market seems to be quite volatile with the trend changing almost every week. This week all the segments were down except for Panamax index.
The BDI was down by 4.06 percent closing at 1110 points. The cape index saw the biggest fall this week down by 11.59 percent closing at 1,320 points. The cape weakness shows there is lack of ore cargoes and probably excess supply of ships.
The Panamax index was up by 6.46 percent closing at 1,202 points. The Supramax index was almost at same levels and the handy size index was down by 2.094 percent closing at 692 points.
The Supramax freight market was steady from Indonesia to India and vessels were trading around $ 8,500 delivery Shanghai for trip to India. Short period charter rates for Supramax were around $ 9,000 per day and for panamax were around $ 8,500 per day.
The average charter rates were at Cape/$ 6,070 per day, Panamax/$ 9,584 per day, Supramax/$ 13,454 per day and Handysize/$ 10,005 per day.
The future for three years (2012-2015) was at around Cape/$ 15,000 per day, Panamax/$ 11,000 per day, Supramax/$ 11,000 per day, Handysize/$ 9,250 per day.
The supramax index in the far east (S8 route) was up by 7.68 percent and closed at $ 9,241 per day (last week $ 8,582 per day) and S7 route was up by 1.78 percent and closed at $ 7,120 per day (last week $ 6,995 per day) . Both routes were likely to be steady next week.
The congestion in EC Australia was at 74 vessels this week (last week 70 vessels). The vessels waiting at main coal loading ports were at Haypoint/3, DBCT/15, Gladstone/7, Abbot Point/3, New Castle/42, Port Kembla / 2 vessels.
On the WC Australia iron ore vessels waiting was at 35 vessels (last week 37 vessels).
The Brent crude oil price was soft during beginning of the week, however firmed up to closing of the week. The Brent crude closed at $ 102.75 per barrel (last week $ 97.99 per barrel), however bunkers prices had slightly softened and closed at $ 601.50 pmt (last week $ 607.00 pmt) for IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 13th July 2012.
