SMC TO PURSUE MINDANAO COAL MINING PROJECTS


Philippine Daily Inquirer  reported that, DIVERSIFYING CONGLOMERATE San Miguel Corp. is inclined to pursue its coal mining projects in Mindanao despite the ban on open pit mining imposed by the provincial government of South Cotabato.

“We’re not affected (by the ban) in our coal mining activities in Mindanao because we can do underground mining or resort to other ways if they are not amenable to open pit mining,” said company president Ramon S. Ang on the sidelines of Petron Corp.’s stockholders’ meeting on Monday.

Former South Cotabato Gov. Daisy Avance-Fuentes signed last month an environmental code in South Cotabato, which bans open pit mining, before moving on to represent the second district of her province in Congress.

The ordinance might derail the $5.2-billion Tampakan copper-gold project of Sagittarius Mines Inc. and other open-pit mining activities in the province.

Earlier this year, San Miguel acquired three coal mines in South Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat with resources capable of generating initially 1,200 megawatts (MW). These were previously owned by Daguma Agro Minerals Inc., Bonanza Energy Resources Inc. and Sultan Energy Mining and Development Corp.

Ang said San Miguel had planned to put up a 300-MW mine-mouth coal power plant in General Santos City following its acquisition of Daguma’s coal mine. A 300-MW coal facility would need about 750,000 tons of coal a year.

San Miguel is also currently in talks with PNOC-Exploration Corp. to either acquire or form a partnership for the Malangas coal mine in Zamboanga Sibugay, as part of the conglomerate’s efforts to increase the output of its planned coal-fed plants in Mindanao.
